The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, takes place in Nazi Germany during World War Two. The story, narrated by Death, is about a young girl named Liesel who is forced to live with a foster family. The story details her growing relationship with her foster family, the Hubermans, various children in the village, and her learning how to read.

The Enemy, by Charlie Higson, takes place in modern-day London, England just after a mysterious virus has caused all the adults to become zombie-like killers. The story follows a band of children who must figure out how to survive in a zombie-infested city.
Going Bovine, by Libba Bray, tells the story of Cameron Smith who has been diagnosed with transmissable spongiform encephalopathy or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease OR mad cow disease. He teams up with a fellow classmate, Gonzo, who is a "video-gaming dwarf." He also gets help from Dulcie, his punk-like guardian angel. He and Gonzo go on a race across the country in order to find a cure for Cameron's sickness.

Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow, is about four teenagers who after a terrorist attack in San Fransisco have to defend themselves against the Department of Homeland Security's attacks on the Bill of Rights.
Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld is the first novel in a trilogy. The other novels include Pretties and Specials. The main character is Tally Youngblood who is about to turn 16 years old. At 16, everyone in this society undergoes a surgery to make them "pretty." Right before her birthday Tally meets Shay. Shay doesn't want to have the surgery and she tries to convince Tally to runaway to a mysterious place called "Smoke" where the uglies live. Tally has a serious choice to make.

The Uninvited, by Tim Wynne-Jones, is about a young girl named Mimi Shapiro. She has just finished her first year at NYU in New York City. She goes up to her father's cottage in a remote part of Ontario, Canada. Once there, she meets a young man named Jay, uncovers some family secrets and deals with some mysterious happenings.
