o Jotting down ideas and thoughts that come to mind during the discussion.

The Passage Picker should:
- Complete their assigned reading for the day of the discussion.
- Complete their assigned role for the day of the discussion.
- Take notes during the discussion period. This can look like:
o Jotting down ideas and thoughts that come to mind during the discussion.
o Participating in completing the assigned task for the discussion period.
The discussion director is responsible for posting any task for that period.
- Maintain a cooperative and friendly discussion environment.
The Discussion Director should:
- Come up with questions about the assigned section of the novel that can be discussed and/or debated by all group members.
- Take responsibility for maintaining a discussion for at least 30-35 minutes.
- Have “extra” questions in his/her mind to keep the discussion going.
- Respond to the Visualizer, Connector and Passage Picker’s contribution based on his/her understanding of the novel.
- Be responsible for posting the task for the discussion period.
The Connector should:
- Make at least three (3) connections to the novel – text to text; text to self; text to world.
- Be able to explain these connections in detail.
- Be able to respond to the Discussion Director’s questions in detail.
- Respond to the Visualizer and Passage Picker’s contribution based on his/her understanding of the novel.
The Visualizer should:
- Visualize at least one major, or multiple minor, areas from the assigned section of the novel.
- Clearly explain the significance of the visual he/she has created.
- Clearly explain how creating this visual deepened his/her understanding of the story.
- Be able to respond to the Discussion Director’s questions in detail.
- Respond to the Connector and Passage Picker’s contribution based on his/her understanding of the novel.
The Passage Picker should:
- Pick at least two passages that are descriptive, suspenseful, interesting, powerful, puzzling, emotional, etc.
- Ask students to turn to the page in the novel where they took the passage from.
- Read the passage aloud to his/her group members.
- Clearly explain why they chose these passages.
- Be able to respond to the Discussion Director’s questions in detail.
- Respond to the Connector and Visualizer’s contribution based on his/her understanding of the novel.
