Learning Goal:
Students will read and understand Act 4, Scenes 1 & 2, and Act 5.
I'm going to summarize the play really, really quickly for you.
Act 4, Scene 1
Oberon takes the charm off of Titiania, mainly because he feels sorry because she is in love with an ass (not my word - Shakespeare's!) but also because he finally took the Indian Boy away from her. When she wakes up, she is horrified to discover that she was in love with such a monstrous creature as Bottom.
Theseus and Hippolyta, who are out hunting to celebrate the day of their wedding, discover the two couples asleep at the edge of the forest. They are particularly confused because Demetrius claims he is now in love with Helena, and not Hermia. Egeus, who is with them, is horrified when he discovers his daugter's betrayal and attempted elopement, but Theseus overules him and says that Hermia & Lysander, and Demetrius & Helena will be married alongside himself and Hippolyta.
Act 4, Scene 2
The workmen are moaning and groaning about Bottom's disapperance and the fact that without him they will be unable to perform their play for the Duke's wedding.
Lo and behold, Bottom arrives back in time to announce that the need to hurry up and get ready, because their play was chosen to be performed for Theseus and Hippolyta and the other couples.
Act 5, Scene 1
The long and the short of Act 5 is that Bottom and his fellow workmen perform their play for the Duke and it is ABSOLUTELY RI-DONK-U-LOUS! It's supposed to be very funny. I've seen a production of the play at Stratford was absoultely hilarious.
The play ends with Oberon, Titania, and Puck blessing the marriage beds of the three cu
