Learning Goal:
Students will learn about the elements of graphic novels.
Students will become familiar with the style of language that Shakespeare uses.
I showed you two powerpoint presentations. One that went through the various camera angles that can be used in movie and in graphic novels. In addition, we talked about the types of shots that can be used in graphic novels. Then, your task was to add dialogue bubbles, sound effects, and narration to a graphic novel that doesn't have any words. You did a great job of adding the text in order to clarify the story.
I showed you the original text for A Midsummer Night's Dream ...

We talked about how Shakespeare uses language. I asked you to remember that Shakespeare was writing almost 500 years ago. The language they used 500 years ago is NOT the same language that we use today. Likewise, the language we use today, will NOT be the same language society uses in 500 years! Think about a current rap song by Jay-Z or Kanye West -- in 500 years, people won't even remotely understand what they're rapping about!
We also "translated" the first lines from the play, spoken by Theseus. When translated into modern language, Theseus could be saying, "Now beautiful Hippolyta, our wedding day is coming quickly. It will happen in four days. It's taking forever to happen! I'm very impatient and I want it to happen now!"
Clearly, I've taken some artistic license, but you get the gist. Remember there are three steps to properly understand Shakespeare:
(1) Read
(2) Define
(3) Translate
Remember ... enjoy the graphic novel. Shakespeare was meant to be watched and acted -- not just read. The graphic novel will help you understand the story
