Learning Goal:
Students will learn how to write effective description using "showing" and not "telling."
Students will describe a favourite person in their life.
Today we took a note about how to write effective description.
Telling - when adjectives are given to describe a person, a setting, a plot, etc.
Showing - when a writer describes a person, a setting, a plot, etc, that allows a reader to draw his/her own conclusions.
- What a character SAYS
- What a character DOES
- What a character THINKS
- What OTHER CHARACTERS say about him/her
We read a personal essay describes her younger sister and explains why her sister is an inspiration to her. Your task at the end of class was to describe, using SHOWING, your favourite person. This could be someone you know - your mom/dad, brother/sister, best friend etc - or someone you don't know - a celebrity, a character from a book, etc. Use a t-chart to organize your thoughts.
