Learning Goal:
Students will learn what diction is and how to apply it to creative writing.
Students will apply the writing skills we've learned so far this semester and write a descriptive paragraph on a topic of their choice.
Diction is a fancy way of saying "word choice" or "vocabulary." Word choice contribues to the audience's perception of what is being described.
For example, how would you react if a menacing dog was running towards you? Would you react differently if a playful dog was running towards you? Or, if you wrote a test in Math class that was a killer, what would you tell your friend about it? What would you say about a test that was a piece of cake? These are all examples of diction.
You were also assigned your descriptive paragraph assignment. For this assignment you are choosing a topic and then describing it using the skills we've learned so far in class. These skills include
- Visualization
- Using indirect description and direct description ... aka showing, not just telling
- Diction - your word choices will dictate how well your audience can picture your topic.
You need to find a picture that represents your topic. This can be a picture that you find online or one that you have taken yourself. Include this picture with your final assignment.
I've attached the assignment below, but you can also find it on Edmodo.
