Learning Goal:
Students will learn about concrete poetry.
Students will try creating their own concrete poem.
Today we learned about concrete poetry. Concrete poetry is where the words of the poem are arranged in the shape of whatever the subject of the poem is discussing.
We looked at a number of examples. The example below is probably the simplest in its form. There isn't much to this poem in terms of words. However, it is the title that gives away what the poem is actually about - "Shape Poem with an Elusive Intruder."

However, concrete poems can be as detailed and as meaningful as any other type of poetry. Take a look at the following examples and think about how the shape actually gives further meaning to the poem.

Remember to write your own concrete poem using the shape of GCI. Remember to include as many of the poetic devices as you can. Even though you're following a prescribed shape, you still need to use language to create a poem that is rich with imagery and strong language.
