There are a few steps you need to take to truly understand Shakespeare's language:
Theseus:
Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour
Draws on apace; four happy days bring in
Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow
This old moon wanes! she lingers my desires,
Like to a step-dame or a dowager
Long withering out a young man's revenue.
nuptial - wedding day
apace - quickly
wanes - becomes smaller
lingers - to make wait
step-dame - step mother
dowager - a wealthy widow
withering - drying up
SHE = the moon!!
Theseus:
Now, beautiful Hippolyta, our wedding day comes quickly. In four days, there will be a new moon. But I think it's taking a long time for the old moon to get smaller. She is making me wait for our wedding day like a wealthy widow makes her son wait for his inheritance.
Remember that we are working through the rest of the play using the literature circle model. We listened to the play up to page 7. Each of you was assigned a role (see handout below) which needs to be completed for our discussion of Act 1, Scene 1 during tomorrow's class.

- Define -- go through and define any words that you don't understand. You can provide a synonym or a dictionary definition
- Translate -- put the text into words that you understand.
- Re-Read -- read the text again.
