I think Shane Koyzcan's TED Talk deserves to be in the top 5 for a few reasons. Firstly, it has an amazing message. Shane tells his story about his past and how he was bullied. He tells about two other teens who grew up surrounded by bullies. The way he words his Talk, you can hear the pain behind every word and you can see the heartbreak in his eyes when he talks. He talks about how they survived the high school bullies and how yes, it did hurt, but they got over it. His talk was extremely moving and powerful. Secondly, he uses his TED Talk to relate to teenagers and to help. He relates to teenagers because he is talking about things that may be daily struggles for many. Every teen knows what bullying looks like, whether it happened to them or they see it in the halls at school. He uses such powerful sentences that even if you haven’t experienced being bullied, you can understand his pain. One of my favourite parts of the To This Day poem is when he is talking about the Sticks and Stones rhyme. He says, "Surrounded by people who used to say that rhyme about sticks and stones, as if broken bones hurt more than the names we got called.” Watching To This Day for the first time, I remember getting a hollow feeling in my chest. Shane is so honest about the topic, about how badly it hurt that sometimes it comes as a shock. You don’t realize how badly words hurt until a powerful sentence like that one is said. In a 12 minute video he was able to make me feel happy, sad, inspired and heartbroken all at once. I’m sure almost everyone can learn something from watching his TED Talk and that is another reason I think it deserves to be in the Top 5 best. Finally, I think this Talk should be in the top 5 because it deserved a level 4 in every section of the criteria. Shane had a 100% understanding of the topic. He used facts and examples from his own life, and used great diction. It was well planned with a clear beginning, middle and end, all his thoughts are in order. He uses lots of enthusiasm, eye contact, hand gestures, and facial expressions when he speaks, especially when he talks about his own experiences. I felt what he felt just from watching him talk. Shane also engages his audience with videos and the power in his voice. Overall, I think this TED Talk is amazing and definitely deserves a spot in the Top 5.
I believe to be the best ted talk for many reasons. First of all, Eddith Widder included many visual aids in her talk, such as the videos captured of the giant squids. All of these videos help as description aids for the giant squid. Second, she definitely knows what she is talking about. She was invited to many different conferences to talk about marine biology and the giant squid. She was on the search for the giant squid and was one of the first to see it on that trip. She had lots of information on the giant squid. Also, she wasn’t just monotone her entire speech. She changed her pace every once and a while and had very good diction. She had some funny parts in her speech, like how in the beginning hoe she compared the differences between a sailor’s story and a fairytale. She kept eye contact with her audience and kept them interested. She is very descriptive when she speaks and leaves nothing out. I believe that Eddith Widder’s ted talk is the best and, quote “This ain’t no $#!*”.
