Learning Goals:
Students will continue to read, understand, and "translate" Act 1, Scene 1.
Students will think critically about the characters we have "met" in the play.
Today we reviewed what happened so far in Act 1, Scene 1. This is the note we took in class:
What are Hermia's Options?
According to Egeus? (1) Marry Demetrius!
(2) DIE! She's a disobedient daughter!
*But remember, in Ancient Greece, women were considered to be the property of, first, their father, and next, their husband.
According to Theseus? (1) Marry Demetrius.
(2) Die!
(3) Become a nun ... because if she won't do what her father wants, she should have to shun the
society of men FOREVER!
PLUS, she must decide before Theseus's wedding day.
According to Lysander? (1) ELOPE!
He has a widowed Aunt who lives outside the walls and rules of Athens. She loves him as her son and they can meet and marry there. He plans on meeting Hermia in the woods tomorrow night and they'll steal away.
The problem? They share their plans with Helena, Hermia's best friend. Helena is upset that Demetrius, who used to love her, now loves Hermia and wants to marry her. She doesn't understand what Hermia has that she doesn't. :(

You were asked to read Helena's SOLILOQUY (a speech stated aloud by a character who is alone on stage that often reveals characters thoughts and/or plans).
Answer these questions:
(1) Write a translation of Helena's soliloquy - this should be done line by line!
(2) What do you predict will happen next?
(3) Find examples of why Helena feels betrayed by Demetrius and Hermia.
(4) List all the characters in Act 1, Scene 1. Give them a personality trait and a reason why you chose that trait.
